The key property of sewage pipes is to have the best possible ratio between stiffness and weight/meter of pipe. A good way to achieve this is to produce twin wall pipes. This solution is well known for polyolefin (PE or PP) but is less developed for PVC.
Thanks to the intrinsic properties of PVC (high E-modulus, possibility to adapt properties with additives, resistance to oxidising agents, …) this material can bring even better properties in twin wall pipes than other materials.
But to get the full benefit of this opportunity, it is necessary to introduce some changes in the technology : contrary to the present technology, both materials for external and internal layers need to have a different composition. The study shows how the choice of these compositions and the structure of the wall influence both the mechanical performance (stiffness, impact behaviour) and the cost of the pipe.
