Examination of Internal Notched Pipe Testing as an Accelerate Methodology for Evaluating the Oxidative Resistance of Plastic Piping in Potable Water Applications

Session 7A

ASTM F2023 and ASTM F2263 have been used to evaluate the oxidative resistance of plastic piping materials to potable water. As a potential method to accelerate this testing, the use of internally notched pipe has been investigated and preliminary research has shown that the method appears to be able to generate the same failure mode as observed with un-notched pipe specimens and significantly reduce failure times in chlorine dioxide treated water. In this paper, the method is further explored in a chlorinated water environment and the applicability and validity of the methodology to evaluate the oxidative resistance of plastic piping materials is examined.
