Plastic pipe systems for petrol stations and beyond: stretching the boundaries of plastic pipe applications
Session 6B
1:40 pm
Ingrid Andersson, Kungsorsplast AB
Kungsörs Plast AB, a Swedish privately owned company, has been leading in the development of PE-based, plastic piping for the transportation of petrol on petrol fillings stations. The system incorporates PE-pipes and electrofusion fittings under the brand name KPS Petrol Pipe System™. Since the first installation in 1981 and driven by an increased environmental awareness, PE-based piping for this application has developed into advanced multi-layer versions suitable for handling hazardous liquid petroleum products. This has been done in close co-operation with a leading PE-supplier.
The paper and presentation will cover the emergence of polyethylene based piping for the forecourt application, will describe the development of an advanced multi-layer construction with internal barriers of EVOH (for permeation prevention) and an electrically conducting layer for the safe dissipation of static electricity while transporting low-conductivity fuels. It will also show and describe the process of how the pipes have been improved to achieve a recent approval to even the most stringent requirement in Germany as the only plastic pipe product in the world. Also, examples of usage in other applications will be described, i.e. a fully plastic piping system used for the higher pressure application of LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) transportation.
