With the increase of energy costs and depletion of non-renewable energy sources, new concepts and solutions are actively being looked at. Among them the possibility of using the energy available from the earth ( or Geothermal energy) is becoming more and more popular.
Geothermal energy is broadly recognized as an environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and virtually inexhaustive heat source, and a more and more credible alternative to traditional heating solutions. It’s also a new business opportunity for polyolefin pipe systems.
“Geothermal energy” is however covering a broad variety of solutions, from deep wells to probes for individual housing To make sure it will remain a sustainable success story for the plastic industry, a deep analysis and understanding of the specific performances requirements, installation and operating conditions for the different applications is extremely important. A comprehensive portfolio of high quality PE and PEX solutions can be proposed to fulfil the specific needs of each part of the systems in order to provide long service life with low maintenance.
This paper will present the progress made in the adoption of geothermal solution in the world, but will also review the development of various technologies that can be adopted for efficient and durable installations, as well as possible future trends.
